4-Day Principles and Process Course

Overview

This course provides an overview of Restorative Justice and where it fits in the context of “Justice” as a whole.  An introduction to Restorative Justice theory, principles, values, facilitator skills and key components of restorative processes lays the foundation for examining both the challenges and benefits of Restorative Justice.  Focus on victim, offender and community needs provides insight as to when and under what circumstances Restorative Justice may be an appropriate approach.

Unit 1

This Unit focuses on the values and principles of Restorative Justice, which in turn are the components that define Restorative Justice.  The shift from “crime and punishment” to “harm and accountability” is explored.

Unit 2

This Unit looks at the Criminal Justice System and how victim, offender and community are impacted by crime. Victim, offender and community needs are explored.  The advantages and risks for those who agree to participate in a Restorative Justice process are considered in further detail.
